Hello, fellow students. I am Tse-Yang Hu, a member of the Class of 2020 from the Department of Economics, and I currently work in the financial industry as a management associate. Whether you are interested in the Department of Economics at NDHU or have already decided to study here, I would like to share some of my experiences and reflections from my four years studying Economics at NDHU.

Economics is a social science that attempts to explain various phenomena in society using scientific methods. Its subjects of analysis are extremely diverse, ranging from consumers' preferences and choices and firms' decisions and pricing strategies to macroeconomic development, business cycles, international economics, and finance. Economists observe and analyze society through various research methods, including theoretical models and statistical empirical analysis. Economics also examines current events that affect our daily lives, such as the U.S.–China trade war, the Russia–Ukraine war, and China's real estate crisis. All of these are important issues studied in economics, and there is much more waiting for you to explore!

National Dong Hwa University is nestled in the beautiful East Rift Valley of Hualien and Taitung. Those unfamiliar with Hualien may assume that, compared with the commercially developed regions of western Taiwan, life here is simple and entertainment options are limited. However, they may also overlook what this place has to offer: enviably clean air, magnificent mountains, and an endless ocean horizon. Having spent four years here, it was only after graduation that I truly realized how rare and valuable it was to be surrounded by such an environment for such a long time. Life here not only broadens your horizons and perspective but also helps you realize that, beyond highly developed and materialistic cities, there are other beautiful things in life worth pursuing.

When it comes to academics, you may worry that the peaceful environment of eastern Taiwan cannot keep pace with a rapidly changing society. In my experience, however, although life here moves at a slower pace than in major cities, it gives students plenty of room to reflect deeply on what they learn. This allows us to build a more solid foundation and fully absorb academic knowledge during these valuable four years. The professors in the Department of Economics at NDHU all hold doctoral degrees from renowned universities in Taiwan and abroad. They are not only experts in their respective research fields but are also passionate about teaching. They patiently answer students' questions in class and genuinely care about their students' lives and well-being. If you study diligently here while also making good use of your free time to experience different aspects of life, I believe every moment at NDHU will become valuable nourishment for your personal growth. Whether you hope to continue along the path of academic research or enter the professional world with the expertise you have acquired, NDHU Economics will provide you with a solid foundation for your future.
