3+2 Five-Year B.A.–M.A. Program

3+2 PROGRAM

3+2 Five-Year B.A.–M.A. Program

Prepare in your first three years・Begin graduate-level study in Year 4・Build deeper economics training in five years

START EARLY, GO FURTHER

3+2 is not "one more year."
It turns your senior year into the starting line for graduate study.

Complete a deeper sequence of economics training in five years while building graduate-level coursework, data-analysis skills, and research experience earlier. You do not need to decide now—knowing the option exists gives you more choices later.

For first- and second-year students: explore your interests first. By your junior year, you can discuss with faculty whether this path fits your goals.
3 + 2 Bachelor's + master's training in five years

WHY 3+2?

Why is it worth knowing about early?

Undergraduate and graduate study do not have to be two completely separate stages. The 3+2 pathway lets qualified and interested students begin the transition earlier.

01
Save time

Connect undergraduate and graduate training earlier and turn senior year into the beginning of advanced study.

02
Reduce cost

Eligible pre-master's students may apply for the senior-year tuition and miscellaneous-fee reduction provided under current regulations.

03
Start graduate courses early

Begin master's-level courses in your senior year and gain earlier exposure to econometrics, research methods, and advanced economics.

04
Build research skills early

Develop data-analysis and research skills sooner and begin exploring possible thesis directions before formally entering the master's program.

YOUR FIVE-YEAR PATH

How does 3+2 work?

The key is not graduating from college in three years. The pathway begins with an application in the second semester of junior year, followed by early graduate coursework in senior year.

Years 1–2
Build foundations

Strengthen economics, statistics, mathematics, and core analytical skills while exploring your interests.

Junior Spring
Apply

After completing five semesters, apply during the announced period to become a pre-master's student.

Senior Year
Take graduate courses early

Begin master's-level coursework and accumulate advanced professional and research training.

After the B.A.
Enter the M.A. program

After earning the bachelor's degree and passing an approved NDHU master's admission route, formally obtain master's student status.

Important: admission to the 3+2 pathway grants pre-master's status; it is not the same as admission to the master's program. Students must still earn the bachelor's degree and pass the master's recommendation-and-screening, entrance examination, or international-student admission route.

IS IT FOR YOU?

Who should consider the program?

This pathway is not only for students who want academic careers. It is also useful for students who want stronger analytical and research skills.

  • You enjoy using logic and data to understand social, industrial, and policy issues.
  • You want stronger skills in data analysis, econometrics, and research methods.
  • You are considering finance, industry analysis, policy analysis, public service, or research institutions.
  • You want to keep open the option of doctoral study or further academic training.
  • You want a more efficient path through bachelor's and master's training.

HOW TO APPLY

Eligibility and selection

The following summarizes the current Department of Economics implementation rules. Formal applications remain subject to the Department's current-year announcement.

Who may apply?

Current NDHU undergraduate students, including transfer students, may apply during the announced period after completing five semesters.

What is required?

Application form, transcript, one faculty recommendation letter, and any other materials that may support the review.

How are applicants evaluated?

Academic record 50% + document review 50%.

When do you become an M.A. student?

You must earn the bachelor's degree by the end of the eighth semester and pass an approved NDHU master's admission route before formally obtaining master's student status.

CREDITS & TUITION

Early coursework, credit transfer, and tuition support
Eligible graduate credits may be transferred

Master's-level courses completed with a grade of B− or above may be transferred in accordance with the regulations. Courses already counted toward the bachelor's degree cannot also be counted toward the master's degree.

Senior-year tuition reduction

The Department's current rules provide, in principle, up to five senior-year tuition-and-fee reduction places for pre-master's students each academic year. Eligibility and refund procedures follow the current regulations.

At least one year in the master's program

Even after eligible credits are transferred, students must spend at least one year enrolled in the master's program.

THREE MYTHS

Three common misunderstandings
Myth 1
Do I graduate from college in three years?

No. More precisely, you begin connecting to graduate-level coursework during your senior year.

Myth 2
Does 3+2 admission mean I am already admitted to the M.A. program?

No. You must still earn the bachelor's degree and pass an approved master's admission route.

Myth 3
Do I need to decide as a first-year student?

No. For now, you only need to know that this option exists for you later.

READY WHEN YOU ARE

Apply first. Decide your next step later.

Get the option first; you do not need to decide on graduate study before you apply.

If you discover that you enjoy economics and want to go further in analysis and research, talk with Department faculty around your junior year about course planning and the 3+2 application.

Official eligibility, procedures, and benefits are governed by the current regulations and annual announcements of National Dong Hwa University and the Department of Economics.
